西方蒙面史
在西方，蒙面的习俗有着悠久的历史。
说到蒙面，人们很容易联想到在假面舞会上所需要佩戴的假面。
假面舞会是万圣节（Halloween）中最具浪漫气质的激情活动之一。

万圣节起源于两千多年前凯尔特人的属阴节（Samhain）。

由于西方人佩戴面具的时间较长，还通常是不透气的硬质面具，因此为了便于呼吸，蒙眼面具会更加常见。

由于西方人的发色、瞳色多种多样，且容易被人准确描述，特别需要隐藏，而它们主要集中在脸的上半部分。
在西方影视剧和舞台剧中，为了让演员们说清楚台词、表达情绪，让观众们认出各位演员，不遮住嘴巴的面具显然更加合适。
有学术研究论证过东西方文化差异导致的符号表情差异，总体来说是亚洲人注重眉目传情，西方人更爱用“嘴”传情。

东方蒙面史
我们来说一下东方“蒙嘴”的来源。
在中国整个儒文化圈，有女性不可抛头露面的社会风俗。但是生活中，难免有各种意外或者各种需求。
In the whole Confucian culture circle of China, there is a social custom that women can't appear in public. But in life, there are inevitably all kinds of accidents or needs.
所以女性会执扇，当有意外发生的时候，第一反应是用扇子遮自己的脸（也有用手帕或衣袖的），用手或手中的东西遮住一部分便不算抛头露面了，那么从方位上讲遮的肯定是嘴巴。
对于生活在现实生活中的东方侠客而言，蒙面是极偶尔的临时行为，最佳行动时间在夜间，故穿着款式各异的全黑“夜行衣”，便于隐蔽，统称“黑衣人”。
东方侠客的头发可遮可不遮，因为大家头发都是黑色，本身就利于隐蔽。黑夜又给了东方侠客黑色的眼睛、眉毛，露出来对整体隐蔽效果影响不大，还利于开阔自己的视野。
所以中国的侠客平时是侠客，蒙面时是“黑衣人”。
在中国的传统文化中，人们更加讲究“含蓄”“眉目传情”“眼睛是心灵的窗户”，蒙住口鼻并不影响正常的沟通和情绪表达。
而西方国家则认为嘴巴是最有表现力的部位，所以他们当然不愿意将口鼻遮住了。
不过，有些事可能冥冥之中早有安排。
中国的侠客称为“侠”，谐音同“下”，常谦称“在下”，所以更适合遮下半张脸。
电影中的西方侠客在英语中称为Super hero(超级英雄)，“Super”源自拉丁语介词super，意为“在上面，上方”，所以西方侠客理应遮住自己脸的上面。
与“ face ”相关的英文
谈到了“蒙面”，在英文中，“face”这个词可以搭配成多种和“脸”有关的英文表达。好奇的小伙伴，一起来学学吧！
1. baby face
顾名思义，baby face 指的是“可爱的娃娃脸”。
Jessie looks younger than she really is because she has a baby face.
Jessie 看起来比实际要小，因为她长了张娃娃脸。
2. long face
指“拉长脸、不高兴”。

干嘛拉着脸？
3. straight face
表示“没有表情的脸”，但多指“强忍住笑声或情绪，装出一副正经的样子”。

Annie 很难忍住不笑。
4. a slap in the face
网络流行语“打脸”一般指被当面证明错误，使其丢脸；或者不给面子。
The Sun calls it a massive slap in the face for the United States government
《太阳报》称之为打在美国政府脸上的一记重重的耳光。
